Book Review: Eight Simple Rules for Dating a Dragon by Kerrelyn Sparks

Book Rating (out of 5):

Happy Valentine’s Day! In honor of the day, I give you a review of my most recent NetGalley read, a frothy little fantasy romance entitled, Eight Simple Rules for Dating a Dragon.

I was in the need of something light and airy. A palette cleanser, if you will, after reading some longer, heavier books. And this hit the spot. It was far from perfect, but sometimes a not-so-perfect book that hits your Kindle at the right time gets an extra star, deserved or not.

For you romance readers out there, you’ll enjoy this tale of a lovely but put upon elf named Gwennore who ends up in the clutches of a dragon prince with a lot of secrets. She has the power to sense illness in others and ends up in a land that’s being slowly killed by an unknown plague that the locals have decided is a curse. The Kings and Queens of this land, in particular, seem to bear the brunt of this curse, most of them seeming to have gone inexplicably mad and died untimely deaths.

My beefs about this book:

  1. Our female lead not knowing that she’s stunningly beautiful and continually being a bit beaten up by the prejudices of others. It was a bit of overkill after a while. Her internal monologue about it started to wear thin on me.
  2. Also, considering that this is supposed to be some fantasy land filled with magical creatures, their language was shockingly modern. Schnookums as a pet name??? Really?
  3. And also the romance moved a little bit slow for me. I was hoping for a little bit of heat a little bit earlier than when it actually happened.

That aside, I somehow managed to smile a good bit while I was reading along. Silas is particularly love-able and overall, it’s just a sweet, feel good sort of read (if you’re into that sort of thing.)

This is the third in a series, but IMO, you don’t need to have read the other books to have enjoyed this one (or at least, I didn’t.) If you do, I’m assuming it’ll shed some light on some of the other characters (the other Embraced sisters that are already married off) that are lightly touched on in the book.

If you want to check it out, Eight Simple Rules for Dating a Dragon hits shelves March 27, 2018.
